Electric riser recliners — for when getting out of the chair has become the hard part.

Two things usually happen long before anyone mentions a riser chair. The last few inches into the seat stop being controlled, and getting back up means pulling on the arm of the sofa or a radiator. Both are how people end up on our falls list.

A riser recliner deals with the mechanics: the chair lifts you gently towards standing and lowers you under control, so nothing is being pulled on and nothing is tipping over. The Saljol Club2 also reclines fully flat, which makes it a bed for an afternoon sleep — or for a night when the stairs are not happening.

These are measured, not bought off a shelf. Seat height decides whether your feet reach the floor, seat depth whether your back reaches the lumbar support, and width whether the arms help or squeeze. Get one wrong and an expensive chair is uncomfortable within a week.
